KUHN WINS FIRST CAREER VICTORY AT LEE:
Lee, NH: (July 12, 2009) -
Jimmy Kuhn became the sixth different race winner in seven
True Value Modified Series events on Friday as he
methodically worked his way back to the front of the field
during the second half of a race that saw him starting on
the pole position, taking the lead on lap 97 in the
100-lap "Port City 100 Presented by LATICRETE" at Lee USA
Speedway.
While Kuhn has finished in
the top three numerous times with the TVMRS, this was his
first-ever victory, and it was worth $2,500 thanks to
added purse money from LATICRETE.
"We didn't care if we won
the heat race," Kuhn admitted after winning heat one to
start on the pole. "It didn't make any difference where we
started. I got to the back of the field early in the race
and just rode around for thirty something
laps. Then I started coming back forward.
The Bridgewater, Mass.,
driver slipped back through the field to run in the 18th
position on lap 45, but he was back to seventh place with
63 laps completed. From there he passed cars one at a
time, taking the lead from Rob Goodenough in turn one with
just three laps remaining.
Goodenough held off Jon
McKennedy for second place at the line. McKennedy
recovered from a lap 63 incident. He was making a pass
attempt for the lead on Richard Savary when the two made
contact, sending both into a spin. Les
Hinckley and Savary were both eliminated in the incident,
while McKennedy restarted in the 14th position.
With his third place
finish, McKennedy regained the point lead from Steve
Masse. Mike Holdridge and Rowan Pennink rounded out the
top five. McKennedy remains the only two-time race winner
of 2009.
The race was run in front
of a near capacity crowd. Heat race winners were Kuhn,
Savary and McKennedy, with Joe Doucette taking home the
consolation victory.
The TVMRS returns to
action on Saturday, passing the halfway point of the
season at the Oxford Plains Speedway, as part of their
Oxford 250 Weekend.
